your horse, they are in pain and it explains why you're having behaviour and/or training problems.

These exercises are not for beginners. ALL horses can do unexpected things – be careful!


1. Does and/or will horse stand squarely, with all for hooves on the ground when you ask, or when standing on its own?

2. How does horse back up – They should move easily, at a walking pace, with head down, diagonal pairs of legs moving together, in a straight line.

3. Neck flexion left and right - The horse should keep its face perpendicular to the ground, and should flex by themselves when you ask, and be willing to hold the position. They should be able to come back to centre smoothly, by themselves, and with neck parallel to the ground.

4. Front /Hind hoof lift – The horse should be able to lift each hoof smoothly when asked, and hold it up for a second or two by itself. How it lifts each hoof is important; it should be smooth, not snatched. The cannon bones of the front legs should be parallel to the ground. The hind hoof shouldn’t come across the mid line or be snatched up high into belly. When the horse puts their feet down, they should be placed squarely under their body. You shouldn't touch the hoof, or the leg except to ask for the lift.

5. Walk your horse in small circles around you as you walk in a small circle facing its girth, with a lead rope attached to the halter – Flexion should be maintained from head to tail, the shape of circle should be circular. The front feet should be being picked up and moving (this isn't a turn on the forehand). The inside hind should be crossing in front of outside hind. The horse should feel soft in your hand and do the exercise willingly.
